Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
