The Leading Album of the Year: The Artist's Lux Claims the Number One Place.

On the surface, this album might appear closer to an arduous academic examination rather than a new popular music project from an artist who just had a previous single was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Divided across 4 different parts and voiced in thirteen tongues, we have a head-spinning symphonic work investigating female mystique, spiritual ascent, and physical transformation, frequently through the lens of different female saints. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward on this record, supported by the lush presence of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within a vast list of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the work of other artists appear quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that this album succeeds in escape overly academic chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, with sole credit going to the artist. While this is not her first project to alchemize the past with modern styles, its scale feel much higher here, and the tightrope walk more precarious. The element that really elevates this fourth album, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist during her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she's breaking hearts apart, you still want to be alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

That playful energy shines clearly during the stirring piano-led song about Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four minutes. Then, all the music drops away, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle and a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes in like cartoonish force. The track then segues into the wild single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in you never exactly understand—nor want to predict—where it is going next."

Nearly each track finishes at a totally different place than how it began. A track examines the transient nature of celebrity over a featherlight symphony before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused work starts off dark and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, before fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic choir arrive to soften the song's rough edges.

The Balance Of Art & Accessibility

A key balancing act of Lux involves navigating the gap of bold innovation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in the English language builds on a refrain that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies while it spirals upward. That feat is repeated by another expansive ballad that grows and constricts, weaving layered tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural impact of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album is popular music on a grand level, an ambitious grasp for high Art amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that masterfully controls its own inherent excess. This is an abundant source of hidden gems that requires time to completely explore but never seem like hard work. While other major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet at which the characters at it, some tipsy on sacred drink, flutter from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from pop's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
