Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
