Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to contest specific decisions from the official, echoing the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
